A Slow Weekend in Lisbon: Sunshine, Tiles, and Sea Air

There are cities that feel like they’re in a hurry - and then there’s Lisbon.
Perched on seven hills, its rhythm is unhurried, its streets bathed in sunlight that seems to linger just for you. Here, mornings begin with the scent of espresso and pastel de nata, and evenings end with the clink of glasses against a backdrop of fado music drifting up narrow alleys.

If you’re craving a few days of warmth, design, and effortless charm, Lisbon might just be the perfect autumn escape.

Morning: Ease Into the City

Start your day like a local - slowly. Wander into a neighbourhood café (there’s one on every corner) and order a bica - Lisbon’s answer to espresso. Pair it with a still-warm pastel de nata from Manteigaria and take a seat by the window to watch the city wake up.

From there, stroll through the Alfama district, the oldest part of the city, where laundry flutters from balconies and every turn feels like a postcard. Don’t rush. Lisbon rewards those who wander.

Afternoon: Tiles, Trams, and the Tagus

No trip is complete without the sound of tram bells. Hop aboard Tram 28, Lisbon’s vintage yellow carriage that winds through cobbled streets, climbing hills that would leave you breathless on foot.

Hop off at Miradouro da Senhora do Monte - a quiet viewpoint that gives you the city in one glance: terracotta rooftops, the Tagus River, and the soft hum of everyday life.

If design and detail are your thing, stop at the National Tile Museum, where centuries of Portuguese azulejos tell stories in colour and pattern.

Evening: Golden Hour and Good Wine

As the sun dips, head to the waterfront district of Cais do Sodré, now home to some of Lisbon’s best bars and restaurants. Order fresh seafood and a glass of vinho verde at Time Out Market, where local chefs share one buzzing, fragrant space.

Later, climb up to a miradouro (viewpoint) with a takeaway drink and watch the city glow. Lisbon at dusk is pure gold.
