Spain could become Brits’ World Cup final team after England heartbreak, new research suggests

England’s World Cup dream may be over, but for millions of fans, the tournament is not finished yet.

The Three Lions were knocked out of the competition after a heartbreaking 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina, who will now face Spain in Sunday’s World Cup final. Argentina came from behind late on to beat England, while Spain had already booked their place in the final after a 2-0 win over France.

But new research from Heathrow Express, the 15 minute train journey from Central London to Heathrow Aiport, suggests many UK football fans may now be ready to get behind Spain.

The research found that Spain is one of Britain’s favourite “secret second teams” during international tournaments, alongside Brazil, Scotland, Portugal, France and Italy. More than half of UK football fans also said they switch allegiances or adopt a new side once their own team is knocked out.

That could make Spain the natural choice for many disappointed England fans as attention turns to the final.

Spain named among Britain’s favourite second teams

According to the research, 53% of UK football fans admit having a second team they support during major international football moments.

Once their own team is out, loyalties can shift quickly, with 54% saying they have switched allegiances or adopted a new side during a tournament.

Spain may also benefit from its style of football, with 29% of fans saying style of play is the biggest reason they support another country. Star players are another major factor, with 26% saying they are swayed by standout names, while 22% say they are drawn to an underdog story.

While Argentina will be aiming to defend their title, the rivalry with England may make Spain an easier team for many fans to support in the final.

The research also found that 63% of fans have cheered for a team simply because they were playing against a rival country.

Football fever sparks travel inspiration

Spain’s appeal may go beyond the pitch too.

The research found Spain is the country fans are most tempted to visit after watching them play at international tournaments, ahead of Brazil, France, Italy and Portugal.

Almost a third of fans said international tournaments make them want to travel abroad, while 12% said they have already travelled overseas specifically to watch a football match.
